Cucurbita Patina Ring

Cucurbita Patina Ring

from £450.00

Inspired by the botanical studies of photographer Karl Blossfeldt, Cucurbita explores the intricate structures and spiralling tendrils of the natural world. Named after the Cucurbita genus of flowering plants, the piece draws on the organic forms, rhythmic patterns and architectural qualities found in nature, which also became defining characteristics of the Art Nouveau movement.

Hand-sculpted in wax using the traditional Japanese wax-sculpting technique of Mitsuro Hikime, the piece captures the fluidity and movement of curling tendrils in bronze. Cast using the lost-wax process, its surface preserves the expressive marks and organic textures of the original wax sculpture, celebrating the relationship between material, gesture and form.

The bronze is finished with a green patina that enhances its natural contours and evokes the quiet transformation of metal exposed to the elements. Subtly reminiscent of the ornamental cast-iron gates and architectural details of the Art Nouveau period, the surface suggests the gradual effects of rain, weathering and erosion over time, lending the piece the character of an artefact discovered in nature.

Through its combination of botanical inspiration, sculptural craftsmanship and aged surface, Cucurbita sits between natural form and ornamental object, exploring the enduring dialogue between nature, art and the passage of time.
